Appliqué quilts were made by whip-stitching colored shapes onto a base fabric. Quilting could then follow the contour of the design or create its own pattern with random circles or diagonal lines, as seen along the border of this quilt.
The tulip and wreath pattern closely resembles Hudson Valley quilts that traditionally incorporated bright pink or green fabric with a continuous vine or with a pieced geometric border. The pale green fabric on one side of this quilt is believed to be the result of purchasing material from different dye lots.
