What are we looking at here? What do you think you see? What are the shifting colors and lights? What is the blue surface?
Jean Shin is one of four artists who created installations for the newly opened Second Avenue subway in New York City. Hers is found at the 63rd Street Station. Shin was inspired to create this video as she walked through the city and was struck by the visual interest of light and color captured on blue-painted wooden walls encasing the construction site. The video can be understood as an abstract composition or a meditation on time and place. It can also be an urban landscape. Compare it to Norman Lewis’ painting, Heroic Evening, on view upstairs on the south balcony.
